Tag Archives: UConn application essay. Film Paper! The Common Application sets a 500 word limit on its personal statement (the long essay). Except t here#8217;s no limit on the number of words you can upload . Confused? You#8217;re not alone. So I asked four college admissions officers for help, and Essay, it turns out that while there are different degrees of flexibility, none of them set the limit at 500 words. Research Paper Topics! What can you learn?

Going a little over is okay (50-100 words), but be careful of being too wordy . Express! And, as always, if you aren#8217;t sure contact the schools they#8217;ll have your best, and safest, answer. Here#8217;s what the admissions officers said: Nathan Fuerst, Director of Undergraduate Admissions , University of Connecticut: A: We do have some amount of flexibility . We want students to express themselves as best they can. If that means that they go a few words over #8212; about 100 #8212; that#8217;s okay. But we also want the student to be cognizant of the film research topics, Common Application#8217;s 500 word limit because some students can carry on douglas mcgregor x, which holds for a while. I#8217;d say to students write your college application essay as briefly and succinctly as you can , but don#8217;t feel like you need to leave out any major pieces, either. Ken Higgins, Director of Undergraduate Admissions, Sacred Heart University: A: Students will often inquire about the word limit for the College Essay, and how they should approach it. My best suggestion to them is to use enough words to get your point across, and tell your story thoroughly, but yet succinctly . It may sound counter-intuitive, but those 500 words run out relatively quickly, so typing a good draft that may go FAR over film research, the limit, and Express Corporation Essay, then trimming could be useful.

Generally speaking, I do not worry too much about the word limit of the essay (Ive never actually counted), however if it is exceedingly long (or too short), it may raise a (slight) red flag during the application review process . If it takes 650 words to get the core of the story in, then so be it, just as long as its not 6,500 words . Joanne Robertson, Assistant Director of film, Admissions and Express, Transcript Evaluator, Quinnipiac University: A: What we usually tell students is to write as many words as it takes to topics, tell the story . It is important that they have it reviewed by an English teacher if possible for grammar and composition. If not, then read it out loud to a parent or older sibling. If they find that it is too wordy or doesnt make sense, go back and revise. Its fine to go over if you need more words to give us a complete picture of how an event or person impacted your life. Just dont embellish too much , use words just because you can or the worst thing of Central Express Corporation Essay, all, send the topics, wrong essay to the wrong school. And, spell check is not fool-proof, use a dictionary if you are unsure of Essay Bullying Prevention, a spelling or meaning.

Ithaca College Director of Admission, Gerard Turbide: A: I would advise students to start by writing a first draft without thinking about length. Choose a topic you care about, and film research paper, write with your own #8220;voice#8221;. Once you have your ideas assembled, you can refine and edit. For each applicant, I#8217;m interested in 2 society, reading a compelling statement that effectively conveys something about that student . I#8217;ve never counted the words used. How Did Economists Get It So Wrong? I. MISTAKING BEAUTY FOR TRUTH. Its hard to believe now, but not long ago economists were congratulating themselves over film paper topics the success of their field. Those successes or so they believed were both theoretical and practical, leading to douglas x, which holds a golden era for the profession. On the film research topics theoretical side, they thought that they had resolved their internal disputes. Film Menace! Thus, in a 2008 paper titled The State of Macro (that is, macroeconomics, the study of big-picture issues like recessions), Olivier Blanchard of M.I.T., now the chief economist at the International Monetary Fund, declared that the state of macro is good. The battles of yesteryear, he said, were over, and there had been a broad convergence of vision. And in paper topics, the real world, economists believed they had things under control: the central problem of Express Corporation depression-prevention has been solved, declared Robert Lucas of the film research University of Chicago in his 2003 presidential address to the American Economic Association. In 2004, Ben Bernanke, a former Princeton professor who is now the chairman of the Federal Reserve Board, celebrated the Great Moderation in economic performance over the previous two decades, which he attributed in part to improved economic policy making. Last year, everything came apart.

Few economists saw our current crisis coming, but this predictive failure was the least of the fields problems. More important was the professions blindness to the very possibility of catastrophic failures in a market economy. During the golden years, financial economists came to believe that markets were inherently stable indeed, that stocks and other assets were always priced just right. There was nothing in the prevailing models suggesting the Essay possibility of the kind of collapse that happened last year. Meanwhile, macroeconomists were divided in their views.

But the main division was between those who insisted that free-market economies never go astray and those who believed that economies may stray now and then but that any major deviations from the film paper path of prosperity could and would be corrected by on Transnational Actors and Coporations, the all-powerful Fed. Neither side was prepared to research paper cope with an Central Express, economy that went off the film paper topics rails despite the Essay on Exploring Roof Feds best efforts. And in the wake of the crisis, the fault lines in the economics profession have yawned wider than ever. Lucas says the film research paper Obama administrations stimulus plans are schlock economics, and his Chicago colleague John Cochrane says theyre based on discredited fairy tales. In response, Brad DeLong of the University of California, Berkeley, writes of the intellectual collapse of the Chicago School, and I myself have written that comments from Chicago economists are the product of a Dark Age of macroeconomics in douglas rejects theory x, which that, which hard-won knowledge has been forgotten. What happened to the economics profession? And where does it go from here? As I see it, the economics profession went astray because economists, as a group, mistook beauty, clad in impressive-looking mathematics, for truth. Until the Great Depression, most economists clung to a vision of research paper topics capitalism as a perfect or nearly perfect system. That vision wasnt sustainable in the face of mass unemployment, but as memories of the Depression faded, economists fell back in love with the old, idealized vision of an economy in which rational individuals interact in perfect markets, this time gussied up with fancy equations.

The renewed romance with the idealized market was, to be sure, partly a response to shifting political winds, partly a response to financial incentives. But while sabbaticals at the Hoover Institution and job opportunities on menace, Wall Street are nothing to sneeze at, the central cause of the professions failure was the desire for an all-encompassing, intellectually elegant approach that also gave economists a chance to show off their mathematical prowess. Unfortunately, this romanticized and sanitized vision of the economy led most economists to ignore all the things that can go wrong. They turned a blind eye to the limitations of human rationality that often lead to bubbles and busts; to research topics the problems of institutions that run amok; to the imperfections of markets especially financial markets that can cause the economys operating system to undergo sudden, unpredictable crashes; and to the dangers created when regulators dont believe in regulation. Its much harder to say where the when does the scarlet letter take economics profession goes from here. But whats almost certain is that economists will have to learn to live with messiness. Research Paper Topics! That is, they will have to acknowledge the importance of irrational and often unpredictable behavior, face up to the often idiosyncratic imperfections of Express Corporation markets and accept that an elegant economic theory of everything is a long way off. In practical terms, this will translate into more cautious policy advice and a reduced willingness to dismantle economic safeguards in the faith that markets will solve all problems. II. FROM SMITH TO KEYNES AND BACK. The birth of economics as a discipline is usually credited to Adam Smith, who published The Wealth of Nations in 1776.

Over the next 160 years an extensive body of economic theory was developed, whose central message was: Trust the market. Yes, economists admitted that there were cases in which markets might fail, of which the most important was the case of externalities costs that people impose on research, others without paying the price, like traffic congestion or pollution. Pain On A Hot Tin! But the basic presumption of neoclassical economics (named after the late-19th-century theorists who elaborated on film topics, the concepts of their classical predecessors) was that we should have faith in the market system. This faith was, however, shattered by Central, the Great Depression. Actually, even in the face of total collapse some economists insisted that whatever happens in a market economy must be right: Depressions are not simply evils, declared Joseph Schumpeter in 1934 1934! They are, he added, forms of film research topics something which has to be done. But many, and eventually most, economists turned to the insights of John Maynard Keynes for both an explanation of what had happened and when does the scarlet take place, a solution to future depressions. Keynes did not, despite what you may have heard, want the government to run the economy. He described his analysis in his 1936 masterwork, The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money, as moderately conservative in its implications. He wanted to fix capitalism, not replace it.

But he did challenge the notion that free-market economies can function without a minder, expressing particular contempt for financial markets, which he viewed as being dominated by short-term speculation with little regard for film research paper fundamentals. And he called for active government intervention printing more money and, if necessary, spending heavily on public works to fight unemployment during slumps. Its important to Essay on Bullying Prevention understand that Keynes did much more than make bold assertions. The General Theory is a work of profound, deep analysis analysis that persuaded the best young economists of the day. Yet the story of research paper economics over Essay on Transnational the past half century is, to a large degree, the story of a retreat from Keynesianism and a return to film paper neoclassicism. The neoclassical revival was initially led by menace, Milton Friedman of the film topics University of Essay Pain Hot Tin Roof Chicago, who asserted as early as 1953 that neoclassical economics works well enough as a description of the way the economy actually functions to be both extremely fruitful and deserving of much confidence. But what about depressions? Friedmans counterattack against film research, Keynes began with the Central Essay doctrine known as monetarism. Monetarists didnt disagree in principle with the idea that a market economy needs deliberate stabilization. We are all Keynesians now, Friedman once said, although he later claimed he was quoted out of context.

Monetarists asserted, however, that a very limited, circumscribed form of government intervention namely, instructing central banks to keep the nations money supply, the sum of cash in film paper topics, circulation and film 2 society, bank deposits, growing on a steady path is all thats required to prevent depressions. Famously, Friedman and his collaborator, Anna Schwartz, argued that if the Federal Reserve had done its job properly, the Great Depression would not have happened. Later, Friedman made a compelling case against any deliberate effort by government to film research topics push unemployment below its natural level (currently thought to does the scarlet letter place be about 4.8 percent in the United States): excessively expansionary policies, he predicted, would lead to a combination of film research paper topics inflation and high unemployment a prediction that was borne out by the stagflation of the 1970s, which greatly advanced the credibility of the anti-Keynesian movement. Eventually, however, the Corporation anti-Keynesian counterrevolution went far beyond Friedmans position, which came to film topics seem relatively moderate compared with what his successors were saying. On Bullying Prevention! Among financial economists, Keyness disparaging vision of financial markets as a casino was replaced by research paper, efficient market theory, which asserted that financial markets always get asset prices right given the available information. Meanwhile, many macroeconomists completely rejected Keyness framework for understanding economic slumps. Some returned to Essay on Prevention the view of Schumpeter and paper, other apologists for the Great Depression, viewing recessions as a good thing, part of the when the scarlet letter economys adjustment to change. And even those not willing to go that far argued that any attempt to fight an economic slump would do more harm than good. Not all macroeconomists were willing to go down this road: many became self-described New Keynesians, who continued to believe in an active role for the government.

Yet even they mostly accepted the notion that investors and consumers are rational and that markets generally get it right. Of course, there were exceptions to these trends: a few economists challenged the assumption of film topics rational behavior, questioned the belief that financial markets can be trusted and pointed to the long history of financial crises that had devastating economic consequences. But they were swimming against the tide, unable to make much headway against a pervasive and, in retrospect, foolish complacency. In the does the scarlet 1930s, financial markets, for obvious reasons, didnt get much respect. Keynes compared them to those newspaper competitions in which the competitors have to research paper pick out the six prettiest faces from a hundred photographs, the prize being awarded to menace the competitor whose choice most nearly corresponds to the average preferences of the competitors as a whole; so that each competitor has to pick, not those faces which he himself finds prettiest, but those that he thinks likeliest to research paper catch the fancy of the other competitors.

And Keynes considered it a very bad idea to let such markets, in Essay on Transnational Actors, which speculators spent their time chasing one anothers tails, dictate important business decisions: When the capital development of a country becomes a by-product of the activities of a casino, the job is likely to be ill-done. By 1970 or so, however, the topics study of Essay on Transnational and Coporations financial markets seemed to have been taken over by Voltaires Dr. Pangloss, who insisted that we live in the best of all possible worlds. Discussion of investor irrationality, of bubbles, of destructive speculation had virtually disappeared from academic discourse. The field was dominated by research paper, the efficient-market hypothesis, promulgated by Eugene Fama of the when does letter place University of Chicago, which claims that financial markets price assets precisely at their intrinsic worth given all publicly available information. (The price of topics a companys stock, for example, always accurately reflects the companys value given the information available on the companys earnings, its business prospects and Essay on Exploring Pain on a Hot Tin, so on.) And by the 1980s, finance economists, notably Michael Jensen of the Harvard Business School, were arguing that because financial markets always get prices right, the best thing corporate chieftains can do, not just for themselves but for film research paper topics the sake of the economy, is to maximize their stock prices. In other words, finance economists believed that we should put the capital development of the nation in the hands of what Keynes had called a casino. Its hard to argue that this transformation in Essay Pain in Cat Roof, the profession was driven by events. True, the memory of 1929 was gradually receding, but there continued to be bull markets, with widespread tales of speculative excess, followed by bear markets. In 1973-4, for example, stocks lost 48 percent of their value.

And the 1987 stock crash, in research, which the Dow plunged nearly 23 percent in a day for no clear reason, should have raised at least a few doubts about market rationality. These events, however, which Keynes would have considered evidence of the unreliability of film markets, did little to blunt the force of a beautiful idea. The theoretical model that finance economists developed by assuming that every investor rationally balances risk against reward the so-called Capital Asset Pricing Model, or CAPM (pronounced cap-em) is wonderfully elegant. And if you accept its premises its also extremely useful. Paper Topics! CAPM not only tells you how to when does letter choose your portfolio even more important from the financial industrys point of view, it tells you how to put a price on financial derivatives, claims on claims. The elegance and research paper, apparent usefulness of the new theory led to a string of Nobel prizes for its creators, and many of the theorys adepts also received more mundane rewards: Armed with their new models and formidable math skills the more arcane uses of mcgregor rejects theory x, which holds CAPM require physicist-level computations mild-mannered business-school professors could and did become Wall Street rocket scientists, earning Wall Street paychecks.

To be fair, finance theorists didnt accept the paper topics efficient-market hypothesis merely because it was elegant, convenient and lucrative. They also produced a great deal of statistical evidence, which at first seemed strongly supportive. But this evidence was of an oddly limited form. Finance economists rarely asked the seemingly obvious (though not easily answered) question of 2 society whether asset prices made sense given real-world fundamentals like earnings. Instead, they asked only film research paper topics whether asset prices made sense given other asset prices. Larry Summers, now the top economic adviser in the Obama administration, once mocked finance professors with a parable about on Transnational, ketchup economists who have shown that two-quart bottles of ketchup invariably sell for exactly twice as much as one-quart bottles of ketchup, and film research paper topics, conclude from this that the ketchup market is perfectly efficient. But neither this mockery nor more polite critiques from economists like Robert Shiller of on Transnational Yale had much effect.

Finance theorists continued to topics believe that their models were essentially right, and so did many people making real-world decisions. Essay On Exploring Pain In Cat Roof! Not least among these was Alan Greenspan, who was then the research paper topics Fed chairman and a long-time supporter of financial deregulation whose rejection of calls to Central Corporation Essay rein in subprime lending or address the ever-inflating housing bubble rested in large part on the belief that modern financial economics had everything under control. There was a telling moment in 2005, at a conference held to honor Greenspans tenure at the Fed. One brave attendee, Raghuram Rajan (of the University of Chicago, surprisingly), presented a paper warning that the financial system was taking on potentially dangerous levels of risk. He was mocked by almost all present including, by the way, Larry Summers, who dismissed his warnings as misguided. By October of last year, however, Greenspan was admitting that he was in a state of paper topics shocked disbelief, because the whole intellectual edifice had collapsed. Since this collapse of the on Bullying intellectual edifice was also a collapse of real-world markets, the result was a severe recession the worst, by many measures, since the Great Depression. What should policy makers do?

Unfortunately, macroeconomics, which should have been providing clear guidance about how to film research address the slumping economy, was in its own state of disarray. We have involved ourselves in a colossal muddle, having blundered in Essay on, the control of a delicate machine, the working of which we do not understand. The result is that our possibilities of wealth may run to waste for a time perhaps for a long time. So wrote John Maynard Keynes in film, an essay titled The Great Slump of 1930, in which he tried to explain the catastrophe then overtaking the world. And the worlds possibilities of wealth did indeed run to waste for a long time; it took World War II to on Exploring Pain in Cat Hot Tin bring the Great Depression to a definitive end. Why was Keyness diagnosis of the Great Depression as a colossal muddle so compelling at first?

And why did economics, circa 1975, divide into opposing camps over film the value of Keyness views? I like to Central explain the film paper topics essence of Keynesian economics with a true story that also serves as a parable, a small-scale version of the messes that can afflict entire economies. Consider the travails of the Capitol Hill Baby-Sitting Co-op. This co-op, whose problems were recounted in a 1977 article in The Journal of Money, Credit and Banking, was an association of about 150 young couples who agreed to help one another by baby-sitting for douglas theory holds one anothers children when parents wanted a night out. To ensure that every couple did its fair share of baby-sitting, the co-op introduced a form of scrip: coupons made out of paper heavy pieces of paper, each entitling the bearer to one half-hour of sitting time. Initially, members received 20 coupons on joining and mcgregor x, which holds, were required to return the same amount on departing the film paper group. Unfortunately, it turned out that the co-ops members, on average, wanted to hold a reserve of more than 20 coupons, perhaps, in case they should want to go out several times in a row. As a result, relatively few people wanted to spend their scrip and film menace 2 society, go out, while many wanted to baby-sit so they could add to their hoard. But since baby-sitting opportunities arise only when someone goes out for paper the night, this meant that baby-sitting jobs were hard to find, which made members of the co-op even more reluctant to go out, making baby-sitting jobs even scarcer. . Take! . . In short, the co-op fell into a recession.

O.K., what do you think of this story? Dont dismiss it as silly and trivial: economists have used small-scale examples to shed light on big questions ever since Adam Smith saw the roots of economic progress in a pin factory, and research paper topics, theyre right to do so. Pain In Cat! The question is whether this particular example, in which a recession is a problem of inadequate demand there isnt enough demand for research topics baby-sitting to provide jobs for everyone who wants one gets at Essay on Bullying Prevention, the essence of what happens in film research paper, a recession. Forty years ago most economists would have agreed with this interpretation. But since then macroeconomics has divided into Essay on Transnational Actors two great factions: saltwater economists (mainly in coastal U.S. universities), who have a more or less Keynesian vision of film what recessions are all about; and freshwater economists (mainly at inland schools), who consider that vision nonsense.

Freshwater economists are, essentially, neoclassical purists. They believe that all worthwhile economic analysis starts from the Central Corporation premise that people are rational and markets work, a premise violated by the story of the baby-sitting co-op. As they see it, a general lack of sufficient demand isnt possible, because prices always move to match supply with demand. Film Paper Topics! If people want more baby-sitting coupons, the when value of those coupons will rise, so that theyre worth, say, 40 minutes of baby-sitting rather than half an hour or, equivalently, the film research paper topics cost of an hours baby-sitting would fall from 2 coupons to Express Corporation 1.5. And that would solve the problem: the purchasing power of the coupons in circulation would have risen, so that people would feel no need to hoard more, and there would be no recession. But dont recessions look like periods in which there just isnt enough demand to employ everyone willing to work? Appearances can be deceiving, say the freshwater theorists. Sound economics, in research, their view, says that overall failures of demand cant happen and that means that they dont.

Keynesian economics has been proved false, Cochrane, of the University of Chicago, says. Yet recessions do happen. Why? In the Corporation Essay 1970s the leading freshwater macroeconomist, the Nobel laureate Robert Lucas, argued that recessions were caused by temporary confusion: workers and companies had trouble distinguishing overall changes in the level of research prices because of inflation or deflation from changes in on Bullying Prevention, their own particular business situation. Film Research Paper Topics! And Lucas warned that any attempt to when does the scarlet letter take place fight the business cycle would be counterproductive: activist policies, he argued, would just add to the confusion. By the 1980s, however, even this severely limited acceptance of the idea that recessions are bad things had been rejected by many freshwater economists. Instead, the new leaders of the film research paper movement, especially Edward Prescott, who was then at the University of Minnesota (you can see where the freshwater moniker comes from), argued that price fluctuations and changes in demand actually had nothing to do with the does the scarlet take place business cycle. Film Research Paper! Rather, the business cycle reflects fluctuations in Express Corporation, the rate of film technological progress, which are amplified by the rational response of workers, who voluntarily work more when the film menace 2 society environment is favorable and less when its unfavorable.

Unemployment is a deliberate decision by film paper, workers to take time off. Put baldly like that, this theory sounds foolish was the Essay in Cat Great Depression really the Great Vacation? And to research be honest, I think it really is silly. But the basic premise of when does the scarlet letter take Prescotts real business cycle theory was embedded in ingeniously constructed mathematical models, which were mapped onto real data using sophisticated statistical techniques, and the theory came to dominate the teaching of macroeconomics in many university departments. In 2004, reflecting the theorys influence, Prescott shared a Nobel with Finn Kydland of film topics Carnegie Mellon University.

Meanwhile, saltwater economists balked. Where the freshwater economists were purists, saltwater economists were pragmatists. While economists like N. Essay! Gregory Mankiw at Harvard, Olivier Blanchard at M.I.T. and David Romer at the University of California, Berkeley, acknowledged that it was hard to reconcile a Keynesian demand-side view of recessions with neoclassical theory, they found the evidence that recessions are, in fact, demand-driven too compelling to reject. So they were willing to deviate from the assumption of perfect markets or perfect rationality, or both, adding enough imperfections to film paper accommodate a more or less Keynesian view of recessions. And in the saltwater view, active policy to fight recessions remained desirable. But the self-described New Keynesian economists werent immune to the charms of mcgregor that rational individuals and perfect markets. Film Research Topics! They tried to keep their deviations from neoclassical orthodoxy as limited as possible. This meant that there was no room in the prevailing models for such things as bubbles and banking-system collapse. The fact that such things continued to happen in Essay Bullying, the real world there was a terrible financial and macroeconomic crisis in much of Asia in 1997-8 and a depression-level slump in Argentina in 2002 wasnt reflected in the mainstream of New Keynesian thinking.

Even so, you might have thought that the differing worldviews of freshwater and research paper topics, saltwater economists would have put them constantly at loggerheads over economic policy. Somewhat surprisingly, however, between around 1985 and 2007 the disputes between freshwater and film, saltwater economists were mainly about theory, not action. The reason, I believe, is that New Keynesians, unlike the paper original Keynesians, didnt think fiscal policy changes in government spending or taxes was needed to fight recessions. They believed that monetary policy, administered by the technocrats at the Fed, could provide whatever remedies the Essay on Transnational Actors economy needed. At a 90th birthday celebration for Milton Friedman, Ben Bernanke, formerly a more or less New Keynesian professor at Princeton, and by then a member of the Feds governing board, declared of the Great Depression: Youre right. We did it. Were very sorry. But thanks to you, it wont happen again. The clear message was that all you need to film research paper avoid depressions is a smarter Fed. And as long as macroeconomic policy was left in the hands of the maestro Greenspan, without Keynesian-type stimulus programs, freshwater economists found little to complain about. (They didnt believe that monetary policy did any good, but they didnt believe it did any harm, either.)

An error has occurred. Please try again later. You are already subscribed to this email. It would take a crisis to reveal both how little common ground there was and how Panglossian even New Keynesian economics had become. In recent, rueful economics discussions, an does the scarlet place, all-purpose punch line has become nobody could have predicted. . . . Its what you say with regard to disasters that could have been predicted, should have been predicted and actually were predicted by a few economists who were scoffed at for their pains. Take, for example, the precipitous rise and fall of housing prices.

Some economists, notably Robert Shiller, did identify the bubble and warn of painful consequences if it were to film paper burst. Yet key policy makers failed to see the obvious. In 2004, Alan Greenspan dismissed talk of a housing bubble: a national severe price distortion, he declared, was most unlikely. Home-price increases, Ben Bernanke said in 2005, largely reflect strong economic fundamentals. How did they miss the bubble? To be fair, interest rates were unusually low, possibly explaining part of the when the scarlet letter price rise. Film Paper! It may be that Greenspan and when does letter take, Bernanke also wanted to celebrate the Feds success in pulling the economy out of the film research topics 2001 recession; conceding that much of that success rested on rejects theory that, the creation of a monstrous bubble would have placed a damper on research topics, the festivities. But there was something else going on: a general belief that bubbles just dont happen. Whats striking, when you reread Greenspans assurances, is that they werent based on on Transnational, evidence they were based on the a priori assertion that there simply cant be a bubble in housing. And the film paper finance theorists were even more adamant on theory holds, this point.

In a 2007 interview, Eugene Fama, the father of the efficient-market hypothesis, declared that the word bubble drives me nuts, and film research topics, went on Bullying Prevention, to explain why we can trust the housing market: Housing markets are less liquid, but people are very careful when they buy houses. Its typically the biggest investment theyre going to make, so they look around very carefully and research paper, they compare prices. The bidding process is very detailed. Indeed, home buyers generally do carefully compare prices that is, they compare the price of their potential purchase with the prices of other houses. On! But this says nothing about whether the overall price of houses is justified. Its ketchup economics, again: because a two-quart bottle of ketchup costs twice as much as a one-quart bottle, finance theorists declare that the research paper price of ketchup must be right. In short, the Central Express belief in efficient financial markets blinded many if not most economists to the emergence of the biggest financial bubble in history. And efficient-market theory also played a significant role in inflating that bubble in the first place. Now that the undiagnosed bubble has burst, the film topics true riskiness of supposedly safe assets has been revealed and the financial system has demonstrated its fragility.

U.S. households have seen $13 trillion in wealth evaporate. Menace! More than six million jobs have been lost, and the unemployment rate appears headed for its highest level since 1940. Film Research Paper! So what guidance does modern economics have to offer in our current predicament? And should we trust it? Between 1985 and 2007 a false peace settled over menace the field of macroeconomics.

There hadnt been any real convergence of views between the saltwater and freshwater factions. But these were the years of the Great Moderation an extended period during which inflation was subdued and film topics, recessions were relatively mild. Saltwater economists believed that the Federal Reserve had everything under control. Film Menace 2 Society! Freshwater economists didnt think the Feds actions were actually beneficial, but they were willing to let matters lie. But the crisis ended the phony peace. Suddenly the narrow, technocratic policies both sides were willing to accept were no longer sufficient and the need for film research topics a broader policy response brought the the scarlet take old conflicts out into paper topics the open, fiercer than ever. Why werent those narrow, technocratic policies sufficient? The answer, in a word, is zero. During a normal recession, the Fed responds by buying Treasury bills short-term government debt from banks. This drives interest rates on government debt down; investors seeking a higher rate of Essay Pain on a Roof return move into other assets, driving other interest rates down as well; and normally these lower interest rates eventually lead to an economic bounceback.

The Fed dealt with the recession that began in 1990 by driving short-term interest rates from research topics, 9 percent down to 3 percent. It dealt with the recession that began in 2001 by Essay and Coporations, driving rates from 6.5 percent to 1 percent. And it tried to deal with the current recession by driving rates down from 5.25 percent to zero. But zero, it turned out, isnt low enough to end this recession. And the Fed cant push rates below zero, since at film research paper, near-zero rates investors simply hoard cash rather than lending it out. So by menace, late 2008, with interest rates basically at research topics, what macroeconomists call the Essay on zero lower bound even as the recession continued to film research paper topics deepen, conventional monetary policy had lost all traction. Now what? This is the when does place second time America has been up against film research, the zero lower bound, the does letter take previous occasion being the Great Depression. And it was precisely the observation that theres a lower bound to interest rates that led Keynes to film paper advocate higher government spending: when monetary policy is ineffective and the private sector cant be persuaded to spend more, the public sector must take its place in supporting the economy. Film! Fiscal stimulus is the research paper topics Keynesian answer to the kind of depression-type economic situation were currently in. Such Keynesian thinking underlies the Obama administrations economic policies and the freshwater economists are furious.

For 25 or so years they tolerated the Feds efforts to douglas mcgregor rejects that manage the economy, but a full-blown Keynesian resurgence was something entirely different. Back in film research paper topics, 1980, Lucas, of the University of Chicago, wrote that Keynesian economics was so ludicrous that at research seminars, people dont take Keynesian theorizing seriously anymore; the audience starts to the scarlet take place whisper and giggle to one another. Admitting that Keynes was largely right, after all, would be too humiliating a comedown. And so Chicagos Cochrane, outraged at the idea that government spending could mitigate the latest recession, declared: Its not part of film what anybody has taught graduate students since the 1960s. They [Keynesian ideas] are fairy tales that have been proved false. It is the scarlet very comforting in times of stress to go back to the fairy tales we heard as children, but it doesnt make them less false. (Its a mark of topics how deep the division between saltwater and freshwater runs that Cochrane doesnt believe that anybody teaches ideas that are, in douglas rejects x, which that, fact, taught in places like Princeton, M.I.T. and Harvard.) Meanwhile, saltwater economists, who had comforted themselves with the belief that the great divide in macroeconomics was narrowing, were shocked to realize that freshwater economists hadnt been listening at all. Freshwater economists who inveighed against the stimulus didnt sound like scholars who had weighed Keynesian arguments and paper, found them wanting. Rather, they sounded like people who had no idea what Keynesian economics was about, who were resurrecting pre-1930 fallacies in Central Express Corporation Essay, the belief that they were saying something new and film research, profound.

And it wasnt just Keynes whose ideas seemed to have been forgotten. As Brad DeLong of the University of douglas x, which California, Berkeley, has pointed out in his laments about the Chicago schools intellectual collapse, the schools current stance amounts to a wholesale rejection of Milton Friedmans ideas, as well. Friedman believed that Fed policy rather than changes in government spending should be used to stabilize the economy, but he never asserted that an increase in government spending cannot, under any circumstances, increase employment. In fact, rereading Friedmans 1970 summary of his ideas, A Theoretical Framework for Monetary Analysis, whats striking is film research topics how Keynesian it seems. And Friedman certainly never bought into the idea that mass unemployment represents a voluntary reduction in work effort or the idea that recessions are actually good for menace 2 society the economy. Yet the current generation of freshwater economists has been making both arguments. Thus Chicagos Casey Mulligan suggests that unemployment is paper topics so high because many workers are choosing not to douglas mcgregor theory x, which holds take jobs: Employees face financial incentives that encourage them not to work . . Paper Topics! . decreased employment is explained more by reductions in the supply of labor (the willingness of people to work) and does the scarlet take place, less by the demand for labor (the number of workers that employers need to hire). Mulligan has suggested, in paper topics, particular, that workers are choosing to remain unemployed because that improves their odds of on Exploring in Cat receiving mortgage relief. And Cochrane declares that high unemployment is actually good: We should have a recession. People who spend their lives pounding nails in Nevada need something else to film research do.

Personally, I think this is Essay on Transnational and Coporations crazy. Film Research Paper Topics! Why should it take mass unemployment across the whole nation to get carpenters to move out of Central Express Nevada? Can anyone seriously claim that weve lost 6.7 million jobs because fewer Americans want to work? But it was inevitable that freshwater economists would find themselves trapped in this cul-de-sac: if you start from the research topics assumption that people are perfectly rational and Essay on Transnational, markets are perfectly efficient, you have to conclude that unemployment is voluntary and recessions are desirable. Yet if the crisis has pushed freshwater economists into absurdity, it has also created a lot of soul-searching among saltwater economists. Film Research! Their framework, unlike that of the Chicago School, both allows for the possibility of involuntary unemployment and considers it a bad thing. Film 2 Society! But the New Keynesian models that have come to dominate teaching and research assume that people are perfectly rational and financial markets are perfectly efficient. Film Topics! To get anything like the current slump into their models, New Keynesians are forced to introduce some kind of fudge factor that for reasons unspecified temporarily depresses private spending. Film Menace 2 Society! (Ive done exactly that in some of my own work.) And if the film research paper analysis of on Transnational Actors where we are now rests on this fudge factor, how much confidence can we have in the models predictions about where we are going? The state of macro, in short, is not good. So where does the profession go from here? Economics, as a field, got in trouble because economists were seduced by the vision of paper a perfect, frictionless market system.

If the profession is to redeem itself, it will have to reconcile itself to a less alluring vision that of a market economy that has many virtues but that is also shot through with flaws and frictions. Essay Pain Roof! The good news is that we dont have to film paper topics start from scratch. Even during the heyday of perfect-market economics, there was a lot of work done on menace, the ways in which the real economy deviated from the theoretical ideal. Whats probably going to happen now in fact, its already happening is that flaws-and-frictions economics will move from the periphery of economic analysis to its center. Theres already a fairly well developed example of the kind of economics I have in mind: the film research paper school of thought known as behavioral finance. Prevention! Practitioners of this approach emphasize two things. First, many real-world investors bear little resemblance to the cool calculators of film research paper topics efficient-market theory: theyre all too subject to herd behavior, to bouts of irrational exuberance and unwarranted panic. Second, even those who try to menace 2 society base their decisions on cool calculation often find that they cant, that problems of trust, credibility and limited collateral force them to paper run with the herd. On the first point: even during the Essay Bullying Prevention heyday of the efficient-market hypothesis, it seemed obvious that many real-world investors arent as rational as the prevailing models assumed. Larry Summers once began a paper on finance by paper topics, declaring: THERE ARE IDIOTS.

Look around. But what kind of idiots (the preferred term in the academic literature, actually, is noise traders) are we talking about? Behavioral finance, drawing on the broader movement known as behavioral economics, tries to answer that question by relating the apparent irrationality of investors to known biases in human cognition, like the tendency to care more about small losses than small gains or the tendency to extrapolate too readily from small samples (e.g., assuming that because home prices rose in the past few years, theyll keep on rising). Until the crisis, efficient-market advocates like Eugene Fama dismissed the evidence produced on behalf of behavioral finance as a collection of douglas mcgregor holds curiosity items of no real importance. Thats a much harder position to film research paper topics maintain now that the collapse of on Bullying a vast bubble a bubble correctly diagnosed by behavioral economists like Robert Shiller of Yale, who related it to past episodes of irrational exuberance has brought the world economy to film topics its knees. On the second point: suppose that there are, indeed, idiots. How much do they matter? Not much, argued Milton Friedman in an influential 1953 paper: smart investors will make money by buying when the idiots sell and selling when they buy and will stabilize markets in the process. But the second strand of behavioral finance says that Friedman was wrong, that financial markets are sometimes highly unstable, and right now that view seems hard to reject. Probably the most influential paper in this vein was a 1997 publication by Bullying, Andrei Shleifer of Harvard and Robert Vishny of Chicago, which amounted to a formalization of the old line that the market can stay irrational longer than you can stay solvent. As they pointed out, arbitrageurs the people who are supposed to topics buy low and sell high need capital to do their jobs. And a severe plunge in Corporation, asset prices, even if it makes no sense in terms of fundamentals, tends to deplete that capital.

As a result, the smart money is film research paper forced out of the market, and prices may go into a downward spiral. The spread of the when does letter place current financial crisis seemed almost like an object lesson in the perils of financial instability. And the general ideas underlying models of financial instability have proved highly relevant to economic policy: a focus on the depleted capital of financial institutions helped guide policy actions taken after the fall of Lehman, and it looks (cross your fingers) as if these actions successfully headed off an film, even bigger financial collapse. Meanwhile, what about macroeconomics? Recent events have pretty decisively refuted the idea that recessions are an optimal response to fluctuations in the rate of technological progress; a more or less Keynesian view is the only plausible game in town. On Transnational Actors And Coporations! Yet standard New Keynesian models left no room for a crisis like the research one were having, because those models generally accepted the efficient-market view of the financial sector. There were some exceptions. One line of work, pioneered by none other than Ben Bernanke working with Mark Gertler of Essay on Exploring in Cat Hot Tin New York University, emphasized the way the film paper topics lack of sufficient collateral can hinder the ability of businesses to Essay and Coporations raise funds and pursue investment opportunities.

A related line of work, largely established by research topics, my Princeton colleague Nobuhiro Kiyotaki and John Moore of the London School of Economics, argued that prices of assets such as real estate can suffer self-reinforcing plunges that in letter place, turn depress the economy as a whole. But until now the paper impact of Essay on Prevention dysfunctional finance hasnt been at film paper, the core even of Keynesian economics. Clearly, that has to change. So heres what I think economists have to do. First, they have to face up to the inconvenient reality that financial markets fall far short of perfection, that they are subject to extraordinary delusions and the madness of crowds. Second, they have to admit and this will be very hard for the people who giggled and whispered over Essay on Bullying Keynes that Keynesian economics remains the film research best framework we have for making sense of Essay on Transnational Actors and Coporations recessions and research paper topics, depressions. Mcgregor Rejects! Third, theyll have to do their best to research paper topics incorporate the realities of finance into macroeconomics. Many economists will find these changes deeply disturbing. It will be a long time, if ever, before the new, more realistic approaches to finance and macroeconomics offer the same kind of Central Essay clarity, completeness and sheer beauty that characterizes the full neoclassical approach.

To some economists that will be a reason to cling to neoclassicism, despite its utter failure to paper make sense of the greatest economic crisis in three generations. This seems, however, like a good time to recall the words of H. L. Mencken: There is always an easy solution to every human problem neat, plausible and wrong. When it comes to the all-too-human problem of recessions and depressions, economists need to abandon the neat but wrong solution of Bullying assuming that everyone is rational and markets work perfectly. Paper Topics! The vision that emerges as the Essay Pain in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof profession rethinks its foundations may not be all that clear; it certainly wont be neat; but we can hope that it will have the virtue of being at least partly right. Because of an editing error, an article on Page 36 this weekend about the failure of economists to research topics anticipate the latest recession misquotes the economist John Maynard Keynes, who compared the financial markets of the 1930s to when take place newspaper beauty contests in which readers tried to correctly pick all six eventual winners. Keynes noted that a competitor did not have to pick those faces which he himself finds prettiest, but those that he thinks likeliest to film paper topics catch the fancy of the other competitors. He did not say, nor even those that he thinks likeliest to catch the fancy of other competitors.

This will take the focus away from time, and on to your abilities and Corporation what you can do for a company, she says. essay explains this Read the topic and sample essay, then study the comments. Click on the highlighted text for comments about academic writing conventions; click on the notes in the margin for commentary on the essay. Birth rates are falling in research, developed countries. In Cat Hot Tin! There is one simple reason for this - young people nowadays are just too selfish and too self-centred to film paper, have children.

And this is particularly true of women. To what extent do you agree with this view? Support your argument with relevant readings and evidence. Countries in the developed world have seen a big shift in attitudes to population growth. Several generations ago, it was generally believed that too many babies were being born, and that societies should try to reduce their populations. Nowadays, however, the concern is the reverse - that birthrates are falling too low and that urgent action is needed to encourage people to have more children. But what are the causes of this trend? And how much are the attitudes and lifestyles of young people to blame? This essay will consider a number of explanations for the so-called baby crash. Pain In Cat On A Roof! My argument will be that to hold young people responsible is neither valid nor helpful. The best explanation, I believe , is to be found in the condition of increased economic insecurity faced by the young.

The birth rate has fallen dramatically in many parts of the film research paper, world. To take several examples, in Europe in 1960, the total fertility rate (TFR) was about 2.6 births per female, but in 1996 it had fallen to when does the scarlet letter, 1.4 (Chesnais, 1998) . In many Asian countries, similar declines have been experienced. Japan now has a birthrate of only research paper, about 1.3, and Hong Kong#039;s has fallen to below 1.0 (Ichimura and menace 2 society Ogawa, 2000) . A TFR of below 2.0 means that a country#039;s population is not replaced, and thus there is a net population decline. Paper Topics! This ageing of the population has the potential to create serious problems. When Does Letter! Fewer children being born means that in the long term, a smaller proportion of the populace will be economically productive, whilst a larger proportion will be old and economically dependent - in the form of pension, health care and film other social services. Film! Most experts agree that these greying societies will not be able escape serious social and economic decline in the future (Chesnais, 1998). So what are the causes of this trend and what can be done to stop it?

One common approach has been to research paper, lay the blame on young people and their supposedly self-centred values. It is argued that in developed societies, we now live in a post-materialist age, where individuals do not have to be so concerned about basic material conditions to survive (McDonald, 2000a). Thus people, especially the young, have become more focussed on the values of self-realisation and the satisfaction of personal preferences, at the expense of traditional values like raising a family. A strong version of this view is put forward by Japanese sociologist, Masahiro Yamada (cited in Ashby, 2000) . He uses the term parasite singles to refer to grown children in their 20s and 30s who have left school and Essay on Bullying are employed, but remain unmarried and continue live at home with their parents. Film Paper Topics! These young people are spoilt, he says, and on Exploring Pain in Cat on a Hot Tin interested only in film research, their own pleasure - mainly in the form of shopping. According to Yamada , it is this focus on self, more than any other factor, that is responsible for on Transnational Actors, Japan#039;s languishing birth rate (Ashby, 2000). Paper! In other developed countries, there is a similar tendency for the young to remain at home enjoying a single lifestyle - and Pain in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof a similar tendency for older people to interpret this as selfishness (McDonald, 2000a). But is it reasonable to attribute the film paper topics, baby crash to the pleasure-seeking values of the Express Essay, young? The problem with this view is that whenever young people are surveyed about their attitudes to family, not only do they say they want to have children, they also express preferences for family sizes that are, on average, above the replacement level (McDonald, 2000a).

As an paper topics example, McDonald quotes an Australian study that found that women aged 20-24 expected to have an place average of 2.33 children in their lifetime. Findings like this suggest that the values of the young are not at all incompatible with the idea of having a family. It seems then that, as young people progress through their twenties and thirties, they encounter obstacles along the way that prevent them from fulfilling their plans to be parents. Some conservative thinkers believe the main obstacle is the changed role and film research topics status of Essay on Prevention women (eg. Film! Norton, 2003). According to this view, because young women now have greater educational and career opportunities than in previous generations, they are finding the idea of family and motherhood less attractive.

Thus, educated middle class women are delaying marriage and childbirth or even rejecting motherhood altogether. It is film menace, claimed that women#039;s improved status - which may be a good thing in itself - has had the unfortunate consequence of threatening population stability. But there are several problems with this argument. For one, the lowest TFRs in Europe are found in Spain and Italy (around 1.2), both more traditional, male-oriented societies, which offer fewer opportunities to topics, women. In comparison, Sweden which has been a leading country in advancing the rights of women enjoys a higher TFR (1.6 in 1996) - even though it is still below replacement. Chesnais (1998: p. 99) refers to this contrast as the on Exploring Pain on a, feminist paradox and concludes that empowerment of women [actually] ensures against a very low birth rate (my emphasis) . Another problem with trying to link improved education levels for women to low birth rates is that fertility in developed countries seems to be declining across all education and class levels. In a recent survey of Australian census data, Birrell (2003) found that, whereas the non-tertiary-educated group was once very fertile, its rate of partnering is now converging towards that of tertiary educated women.

We can summarise the film, discussion to this point as follows: Young people today, in 2 society, spite of what#039;s said about their values, still express a desire to have children. However, few end up having as many as they say they would like. The improved education and career opportunities for women does not seem to be the decisive factor in reducing the number of children that a woman has. These conclusions suggest that there must be something else involved. Film Topics! Many writers are now pointing to a different factor - the film 2 society, economic condition of young people and their growing sense of insecurity. Peter McDonald (2000a) in his article #039;Low fertility in film paper topics, Australia: Evidence, causes and does place policy responses#039; discusses some of the things that a couple will consider when they are thinking of film having a child. One type of thinking is Central Corporation, what McDonald calls Rational Choice Theory, whereby a couple make an assessment of the relative costs and research paper topics benefits associated with becoming a parent. In traditional societies, there has usually been an economic benefit in having children because they can be a source of labour to help the family.

In developed societies, however, children now constitute an economic cost, and so, it is argued, the benefits are more of a psychological kind - for example, enjoying the status of being a parent, having baby who will be fun and will grow up to love you, having offspring who will carry on the family name etc. The problem, McDonald suggests, is that for many couples nowadays the economic cost can easily outweigh any perceived psychological benefits. McDonald (2000b) discusses another type of decision-making - Risk Aversion Theory - which he says is also unfavourable to the birth rate. According to this theory, when we make important decisions in our lives life, if we perceive uncertainty in our environment, we usually err on the side of safety in order to avert risk. McDonald points to a rise in film, economic uncertainty which he thinks has steered a lot of young people away from life-changing decisions like marriage and parenthood: Jobs are no longer lifetime jobs. There is a strong economic cycle of booms and busts. Geographic mobility may be required for employment purposes (McDonald, 2000: p.15). Birrell (2003) focuses on increased economic uncertainty for men.

Referring to film research topics, the situation in Australia, he discusses men#039;s reluctance to form families in terms of perceived costs and risks: Many men are poor - in 2001, 42 per when does, cent of men aged 25-44 earnt less than $32,000 a year. Only two-thirds of men in this age group were in full-time work. Young men considering marriage could hardly be unaware of the risks of marital breakdown or the long-term costs, especially when children are involved (Birrell, 2003: p.12). And Yuji Genda (2000) in Japan, responding to Yamada#039;s analysis of parasite singles, argues that the paper, failure of when does letter place young Japanese to leave home and start families is film research topics, not due to self-indulgence, but is an Essay on Exploring Pain on a understandable response to increasingly difficult economic circumstances.

Genda (2000) notes that it is the film research topics, young who have had to bear the Central Essay, brunt of the decade long restructuring of the Japanese economy, with youth unemployment hovering around 10% and a marked reduction in secure full-time jobs for the young. Young people around the world seem to have an increasing perception of economic uncertainty and contemplate something their parents would have found impossible - a decline in paper, living standards over their lifetime. According to a 1990 American survey, two thirds of respondents in the 18-29 age group thought it would be more difficult for douglas mcgregor, their generation to live as comfortably as previous generations (cited in Newman, 2000: p.505). Film! Furthermore, around 70% believed they would have difficulty purchasing a house, and around 50% were worried about their future. Findings like these suggest that the younger generation may be reluctant to have children, not because they have more exciting things to do, but because they have doubts about their capacity to Bullying Prevention, provide as parents.

If we accept that economics has played a significant role in young people choosing to have fewer babies, then the key to reversing this trend is for governments to take action to remove this sense of insecurity. A number of policy approaches have been suggested. Some writers have focussed on film research paper topics, the need for theory x, which holds that, better welfare provisions for film research paper topics, families - like paid parental leave, family allowances, access to child care, etc (Chesnais, 1998). Others have called for more radical economic reforms that would increase job security and raise the living standards of the letter take place, young (McDonald, 2000b). It is hard to know what remedies are needed. What seems clear, however, is that young people are most unlikely to reproduce simply because their elders have told them that it is selfish to do otherwise. Castigating the young will not have the film topics, effect of menace making them willing parents; instead it is likely to just make them increasingly resentful children. Ashby, J. Research Paper! Sociology: Exploring the architecture of everyday life. California: Pine Forge. Notice what the topics, question is asking students to do - in this case saying how much they agree with the #039;view#039; in the topic. Essay On Transnational And Coporations! What do you think? Is this a reasonable explanation for paper topics, the declining birthrate? Hint: always spend some time looking over and thinking about an essay topic before you start your planning and reading for it. As part of this thinking, you should give some thought to what your position (argument) could be.

Notice how in the introduction, this student writer: introduces the topic area in on Bullying Prevention, a general way (ie. declining birthrates) introduces the main issue to be covered in the essay (ie. why this is film research topics, happening). Hint: there are many different ways you can begin an essay - if you are stuck, try beginning with i) and ii). In the last part of the introduction, the student introduces his argument. Notice how he disagrees with the explanation in the topic, and then offers an alternative explanation. Hint: in on Exploring on a Roof, the introduction it is always a good idea to state what you intend to argue. In this paragraph, the paper, student considers the Central Corporation Essay, first part of the topic - that birth rates have fallen. This is presented as background information. Notice how the student begins the paragraph with a claim (that the birth rate has fallen dramatically in many parts of the research paper topics, world) and film 2 society then supports this with relevant evidence (statistics from Europe and Asia). Hint: in your writing be aware when you are making claims - be aware also of the need to research paper, support them with some evidence. After giving some background in paragraph 2, the student reminds the reader what the main issue is - why birthrates have declined?

Notice also that the student has seen the issue as a #039;problem#039; - and asks What can be done about it? Hint: always be aware what the main issue is you are addressing in your work. This paragraph mainly summarises the on Exploring on a Hot Tin, ideas of those who think young people are to research paper, blame for declining birthrates. Notice how in the first part of the paragraph, these ideas are discussed in a general way. In the second part, the student focuses on the ideas of a single writer (Yamada) as a specific example of this view. Hint: always try to find opportunities in your work to engage with the ideas of individual writers. The previous paragraph was concerned with summarising some ideas. Essay Pain In Cat On A Hot Tin! Notice how in this new paragraph, the student provides a critique of these ideas. (Recall the student#039;s argument in the introduction: . to hold young people responsible is neither valid nor helpful).

Notice too that the research paper, student provides some supporting evidence for this critique - mainly from the work of McDonald. Hint: it is Express Corporation, quite OK to film topics, criticise the Express, ideas of other writers - in fact many essay topics will specifically ask you to do this. But if you are going to be critical, you need to provide good reasons for your critique. Recall that the topic suggested that young people were to blame for declining birthrates - and then went on to single out women. In this paragraph, the student takes up this gender issue. Hint: aim to structure your essays so that all issues in paper, the topic are covered - and in does take place, some logical sequence.

In this paragraph the film research paper topics, student seeks to dismiss the view that young women are to blame. (There are several problems with this argument).Notice that the student then goes on to explain these problems (For one. ; Another problem is that . ). Hint: the providing of a well-organised critique is something your lecturers will value highly in your work. Recall the second part of the menace 2 society, student#039;s argument stated in the introduction: The best explanation is to be found in the condition of increased economic insecurity faced by the young. Research Paper! The student now elaborates on Essay on Exploring Pain in Cat on a, this part of the argument. Hint: remember that the argument is the key to any essay you write.

In the body of your essay, you need to be sure that your argument comes through clearly. Providing evidence for the argument. The student is arguing that economic insecurity experienced by young people is the main reason why the birthrate is in decline. Notice how in the rest of the essay, he seeks to support this argument with various forms of research evidence. The student presents a range of evidence: several theories discussed by film 2 society McDonald some research by Birrell comments by Genda results of a US survey. Hint: it is important to have an argument in your essay. But it is equally important to provide support for what you are arguing.

Your essays will be judged mainly on your ability to do these two things. There are a number of film research things happening in the scarlet letter place, the conclusion. In the first sentence, the student restates his argument - if we accept that. . He then goes on to discuss what could be done to deal with the problem. In broad terms this is a discussion of the implications of the students#039; argument. Notice also how the student mentions the negative implications of the blaming approach. Hint: a conclusion that only restates the film research, argument can be a bit uninteresting. You might also like to consider the implications of your argument - but you should do this briefly. Think: I have argued for this position - so what might follow on from this. You may have noticed that this essay is on Transnational Actors and Coporations, quite tightly structured. Its paragraph structure can be set out thus: Introduction Background to issue Explanation point 1 - summary student#039;s critique Explanation point 2 - summary student#039;s critique Student#039;s alternative explanation - Evidence 1 - Evidence 2 - Evidence 3 Conclusion.

Hint: always try to map out a structure for topics, your essay. Do this before you do too much writing. You may have noticed that the douglas mcgregor rejects that, essay is free of spelling, typographical and grammatical errors. Hint: always read your work very carefully before you submit it. Avoid doing your editing on the screen. Always print out and edit from a hard copy. Note in the references section, you need to list all the film research paper, texts you have referred to (cited) in the essay - not all the texts you have read, as some students mistakenly believe. Central Express Corporation Essay! Notice that the sample essay refers to a total of film research paper nine texts. This is film menace 2 society, a good number, and indicates that the student has done a fair amount of reading. Hint: try to include a reference to research, most of the texts that you read for an essay - so that you can build up a reasonable list of references. Express Essay! Of course, all references have to film paper, be relevant to film 2 society, your argument.

Notice how the student uses I in his essay: The best explanation, I believe, is. And in the previous sentence, another first person pronoun is used: My argument is that . Some students have the impression that they are not allowed to film research paper topics, use these words in their written work. But in fact they can often be found in academic writing. In general, the best place to Essay on Exploring in Cat Hot Tin, use them is in the introduction - when you are presenting your argument. But if you are concerned that it is not OK to use I, you can use other expressions - which avoid self-reference, but which mean much the same thing, e.g. This essay will argue that . Remember though, that the film research paper topics, really important issue is not the words you use to Essay on Exploring Pain in Cat Roof, present your argument - but that your essay actually has a clear argument. Try to keep your paragraphs a reasonable length. (Most paragraphs in this essay are around 7-8 sentences long.) Citations are used to indicate the source of the ideas you have used in your essay.

Note that there are two main citation systems: the author-date system (also known as Harvard); the footnote system (also known as Oxford). In this essay, the author-date system has been used. (Always check which system is required in research, each of your subjects.) Citation 2 (Ichimura and Ogawa, 2000) Citations can be set out in a number of ways. One method is to present some information and then provide the citation immediately after it to indicate the source. These are known as #039;information-prominent#039; citations eg:

Japan now has a birthrate of only about 1.3, and Hong Kong#039;s has fallen to below 1.0 (Ichimura and Ogawa, 2000). Other formats are considered further on. Citation 3 Masahiro Yamada (cited in menace, Ashby, 2000) This citation means that the student is dealing with the film research, ideas of Yamada, but actually read about them in on Exploring Pain in Cat Hot Tin Roof, Ashby#039;s text. Whilst you should make an effort to film research, read ideas in theory holds that, their original form, this is not always possible.

In such cases, use the #039;cited in#039; format. When you are summarising the ideas of a writer, you need to use reporting expressions like the ones used here: He [Yamada] uses the term . According to film research topics, Yamada. You use these to distance yourself from certain language. eg. when you are using an informal expression, or a term used by others that you don#039;t necessarily agree with. In this paragraph, the student wants to reject the view in the topic - that young people#039;s selfishness is to blame for the declining birthrate. Notice how he does this in a careful way, by using expressions like: Findings like this suggest that . It seems then that . Being careful about the menace, way you express your claims is a distinctive feature of academic style. When you quote an author (like Chesnais here) you need to use quotation marks, and indicate the exact page number in the citation. Sometimes you may need to change the wording of the quote slightly so that it fits into your sentence. If you need to add/change any words, use [ ]; if you need to film paper, delete words, use . (Whilst it is OK to change the wording of Essay on Transnational and Coporations a quote, you must never change its sense.)

Use italics when you want to emphasise a word. Film Paper Topics! (When you do this in a quote, you need to 2 society, indicate that it is your emphasis.) It#039;s OK to use dot points in an essay (or numbered points here), but use them very sparingly. Citation 4 Peter McDonald (2000a) . discusses. Notice how in some citations the author can be part of the sentence: Peter McDonald (2000a) . Film Topics! discusses some of the Actors, things etc. Research Topics! This is known as an #039;author-prominent#039; citation and is very common in academic writing. Notice the use of reporting verbs in this citation type (discusses). Use #039;inverted commas#039; for the title of an article. Use italics for the title of a book.

Notice some of the other reporting expressions used in the student#039;s summary of Peter McDonald#039;s ideas: . what McDonald calls. . McDonald points to . . which he thinks. It#039;s very important to make it clear to your reader when one paragraph ends and a new one begins. In this paragraph (#9), there is some potential for confusion. Notice how the student has used indenting to make this clear. Quotes of more than one sentence in length should be separated from the does letter, main text. Notice how these are indented and are in a slightly smaller font. Again you should indicate the page number. You only film research, have to provide a separate list of references when you use the author-date system. Entries should be set out in alphabetical order.

Each entry should generally be set out in the following order and format: Author family name, Initial. (date). Does Place! Title. Film Research! Place: Publisher. It is becoming increasingly common for students to refer to sources from the world wide web in their essays. In addition to 2 society, providing author and research topics title of site, you need to include: the URL for the site when you accessed the site. Although web references can be very useful, you obviously need to exercise some caution - there is a lot of film menace 2 society junk around. Check all sites carefully to be sure the information provided has credibility (.edu and .org sites are generally the more reliable). Problems?

Scholarship Essay Three. Fulbright Application Essay. On one hot late-summer day when I was in high school, my parents came back from a shopping trip with a surprise present for me: the legendary board game, Diplomacy. At first I scoffed at such an on Transnational and Coporations old-fashioned game. Paper Topics! Who would want to waste glorious sunny days moving armies around a map of pre-World War I Europe, pretending to be Bismarck or Disraeli? But after playing the Actors game once, I became absolutely riveted by film paper the nuances of statecraft, and soon began losing sleep as I tried to craft clever diplomatic gambits, hatch devious schemes, and Central better understand the game's ever-changing dynamics.

As my friends and I spent the second half of the summer absorbed by the game, my parents grinned knowingly. Film Research! How could I resist being fascinated with Diplomacy, they asked me, when I incessantly read about international affairs, and Essay in Cat Hot Tin Roof liked nothing more than debating politics over dinner? How could I resist being fascinated, when I had spent most of my summers in Greece (and, much more briefly, France and research topics England), witnessing first-hand the ways in which countries differ socially, culturally, and politically? Though my passion for foreign policy and international affairs undoubtedly dates back to high school, I never had the chance to fully develop this interest before college. Once I arrived at Harvard, however, I discovered that I could learn about international relations through both my academics and my extracurricular activities. Academically, I decided to concentrate in Government, and, within Government, to take classes that elucidated the forces underlying the relations of states on the world stage. Some of the douglas theory holds most memorable of these classes included Human Rights, in paper, which we discussed what role humanitarian concerns ought to play in international relations; Politics of Western Europe, in which I learned about the social, economic, and political development of Corporation, five major European countries; and Causes and Prevention of War, which focused on film paper, unearthing the roots of conflict and finding out how bloodshed could have been avoided. Currently, for my senior thesis, I am investigating the strange pattern of Central Express Essay, American human rights-based intervention in the post-Cold War era, and trying to determine which explanatory variables are best able to account for research topics it. Interestingly, I think that I have learned at least as much about international relations through my extracurriculars in and Coporations, college as I have through my classes. Film Paper Topics! For the past three years, for instance, I have helped run Harvard s three Model United Nations conferences. As a committee director at these conferences, I researched topics of menace 2 society, global importance (e.g. the violent disintegration of states, weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East), wrote detailed study guides discussing these subjects, and then moderated hundreds of students as they debated the topics and strove to resolve them.

Even more enriching for me than directing these committees was taking part in them myself. As a delegate at other schools conferences, I would be assigned to film research paper represent a particular country on a particular UN committee (e.g. France on the Security Council). I would then need to research my country s position on the topics to be discussed, articulate my view in Essay in Cat Hot Tin, front of research paper, others in my committee, and convince my fellow delegates to support my position. Trying to on Exploring Pain on a Hot Tin peg down a country s elusive national interest, clashing over thorny practical and film research paper philosophical issues, making and breaking alliances - Model UN was basically a simulation of how diplomacy really works.

Thankfully, I have also found time over the past few years to cultivate interests and skills unrelated to on Exploring in Cat Hot Tin Model UN and foreign policy. One of the most important of film paper topics, these has been community service. As a volunteer for Evening With Champions, an annual ice-skating exhibition held to raise money for children with cancer, and as a teacher of a weekly high school class on current events and international affairs, I have, whenever possible, used my time and talents to benefit my community. Another more recent interest of mine is the fascinating realm of business. Two years ago, my father s Christmas present to me was a challenge rather than a gift: he gave me $500,but told me that I could keep it only if I invested it in the stock market - and earned a higher rate of return than he did with another $500. Since then, I have avidly followed the stock market, and become very interested in how businesses interact and Corporation respond to strategic threats (perhaps because of the similarities between business competition and paper topics the equally cutthroat world of diplomatic realpolitik). A final passion of mine is writing. As the writer of menace 2 society, a biweekly column in the Independent, one of Harvard s student newspapers, I find very little as satisfying as filling a blank page with words - creating from nothing an elegant opinion piece that illuminates some quirk of college life, or induces my readers to consider an issue or position that they had ignored until then. Because of my wide range of interests, I have not yet decided what career path to follow into the future. In the short run, I hope to research paper study abroad for a year, in the process immersing myself in another culture, and on Transnational Actors deepening my personal and academic understanding of international affairs. Film Research Paper! After studying abroad, my options would include working for a nonprofit organization, entering the corporate world, and attending law school.

In the long run, I envision for myself a career straddling the highest levels of international relations, politics, and business. I could achieve this admittedly ambitious goal by advancing within a nonprofit group, think tank, or major international company. Perhaps most appealingly, I could also achieve this goal by entering public service and obtaining some degree of influence over actual foreign policy decisions - that is, becoming a player myself in the real-life game of Diplomacy.
